Description:
The Mauser Model 1898 is one of the most famous military rifles in history and probably one of the most well known worldwide. The ‘98 has seen action in two world wars and has been widely copied by other nations in various forms. The design of the American ’03 Springfield rifle was essentially a copy of the 1898, albeit using a small ring receiver like that found on the Swedish Mauser Model of 1896. In fact, the U.S. had to pay Mauser royalties for the ‘03s that were produced prior to U.S. declaration of war against the Central Powers in 1917. The British Pattern 1914, American M1917, and Japanese Types 38 and 99 are also examples of ’98 derivatives although these four share the distinction of featuring cock-on-closing rather than the standard cock-on-opening found on the 98.  The rifle shown here is the Polish Wz. 1929 Short Rifle, which is in every respect, a copy of the Karabiner 98K, itself a shortened Model 1898. One feature that makes the Wz. 1929 stand out among all other Mauser copies is the short piece of metal that sticks out in front of the front sight. When a bayonet is installed on the rifle, the ring of the bayonet rests up against this protrusion to ensure stability and prevent wobbling in place. This Wz. 29 appears to have been modified by Radom postwar for sale to a country in the Middle East. The original receiver markings were ground and polished out, leaving only a serial number on the left side and a small Z inside a circle on the right side. The bolt hand was turned down for ease of use. Naturally, as with most rebuilds, serial numbers do not match. The metal itself is in excellent shape and exhibits little to no pitting. The stock exhibits more wear and tear. There are several dings and dents, but no cracks are visible. There appears to be an armorer’s repair to the stock on the lower right hand side near the butt plate. The bore is in superb shape and was well taken care of. There is a small spot near the muzzle that is nearly invisible and should have no effect on the bullet. The rifle should provide excellent accuracy. There is no cleaning rod. The hilt of the bayonet is stamped with a crown and a serial number in Arabic numerals. The left side of the blade exhibits little pitting, but the right side exhibits a bit more. Most of it is very shallow and difficult to actually feel with a bare fingertip. The very tip of the blade is worn but could be sharpened. Unfortunately there is no scabbard.
