Description:
This is a Colt Model 1862 Police Revolver, professionally period inscribed "J.B. Clark 1862" on the backstrap.  Serial no. is 7247, indicating manufacture in 1861, early on for the model.  This model is considered by many collectors, per Flayderman, as the ultimate in streamlined design by Colt's factory in the percussion period.  It is .36 caliber, with a 6 1/2" octagonal barrel (the longest variant for this model), 5-shot with rebated and half-fluted cylinder.  The grips are one-piece walnut.  The frame, hammer, and lever are casehardened, and the remainder is blued.  Gripstraps are silver plated brass.

CONDITION: Fine Plus.  This gun has strong traces of blue and strong case colr.  It has 20% blue in protected spots on the barrel and flutes, 95% grip varnish (grips are outstanding), 40% case color on the frame, and 15% silver on the brass.  Cylinder is thoroughly fine.  The markings are sharp, and the mechanics are crisp and tight.  A really excellent example of this sleek model.  The identity of the inscribed soldier is not confirmed, but my seller included paperwork on James B. Clark of the 10th Illinois Cavalry, who enlisted in 1861, re-enlisted in 1864, and died while in service in Springfield, IL in 1864.  The Illinois 10th spent the War on the Wetsren Frontier, in Missouri, Tennessee and Arkansas.  It may not be his gun, since there are a lot of possibles on the rosters, but the inscription and date make this a soldier's sidearm and ideal for cavalry.  Of course, investigating is part of the good time with inscribed CW guns.
