Description:
General Specs: Darne, Year Post 1924, 10 Gauge, 7lbs 2oz, Briley screw-in chokes, LOP 14 3/4", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 11/16"
Serial Number: SPC980

The Darne shotgun was created in France in 1897 as a very different action referred to as a “SLIDING BREECH” shotgun.  Unique in that the barrels do not pivot on a hinge pin and the action is released by lifting the top opening lever, referred to as the “key”, and in one motion sliding the moving part of the action rearward, ejecting the fired shell(s), allowing the user to quickly feed two shells into the empty chambers and then briskly shove the key forward, sliding the action into battery and strongly locking the action into ready to fire mode.  It is very cool and solid design, with few moving parts and really no areas to wear or “shoot loose”.  The action was so well designed initially that it has remained essentially unchanged for the past 125 years and still being built today.  The guns came in several series and grades, ie the Halifax, R Series, and the V Series, the top of the line in the Darne line up.  This rare shotgun was special ordered in the big bore 10ga. with the 2 7/8” chamber and built as an R16 Grade gun.  The serial number, SPC980, indicates a special order Darne, and I, nor anyone experienced in the Darne shotguns, has ever seen one in 10 gauge.  None of the Darne literature or catalogues mention the availability of a 10ga., even by special order.  The gun is in excellent mechanical condition, with bright shiny bores, 27 ½” barrels fitted with Briley screw-in chokes (IC, M, F chokes included), 35 thousandths minimum wall thickness in either barrel, clear sharp engraving, solid wood with no cracks or repairs, horn forend tip, fire blued triggers…all in excellent shape ready to go afield.  If you have never read up on the notable benefits of the 2 7/8” 10-gauge shotshell ballistics, you may be surprised at how deadly a field and waterfowl load they are.  Loaded to 1 1/4oz. or 1 3/8oz. loads, they mimic a 12ga. heavy field load, but have a much shorter shot string.  Shorter shot strings put many more pellets on a crossing target than a long shot string, as with the longer shot string on a crossing target many of the pellets pass behind the bird having no part in killing the bird.  The gun weighs only 7lbs. 2oz. and balances nicely between the hands.  SEE THE SPECIFICATIONS BELOW FOR DETAILS ON THE GUN.  You are not likely to see another like this one, and we have priced the gun to sell.  Thanks for looking!
