Here we have an absolute treasure…a James Woodward & Sons snap-action model “THE AUTOMATIC” 12 bore, sn3740 built in 1883 and documented by James Purdey & Sons with a historical letter.  THIS GUN IS IN SUPERB CONDITION, REMAINS IN PROOF, WITH THE ORIGINAL CHOKE CONSTRICTIONS AND A MINIMUM BARREL WALL THICKNESS OF 25 THOU ANYWHERE ON THE BARRELS.  The beautiful Damascus barrels have mirror shiny bores with no pitting, tight ribs, no dents or damage anywhere, just as close to perfection as you can get.  The barrels are tight as new on the hinge pin and standing breech, and all mechanics are in supreme working order.  Woodward was known for its 29” barrels, a length that they considered the perfect length for handling dynamics, ballistics, and graceful, good looks.  When you examine the action, forend, and trigger guard you see metal working skills that may not exist in today’s world.  The action is so elegantly sculpted and filed that it is beyond compare.  It is no wonder that those the really know consider the Woodward gun the finest ever created…superior to Purdey, Holland & Holland, and even Boss.  Look at the three-dimensional leaves carved into the breech balls, the tiny and perfect fine English scroll, the borders and screws.  It really has no equal.  The boldly figured European walnut is fit perfectly to the action and metal, with drop points and perfect checkering, laid out superbly through the wrist for strength and longevity.  The stock dimensions are generous and modern, terminating with the most superior fit and finished leather pad I have witnessed.  THIS ENTIRE GUN IS SIMPLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF A BEST BRITISH DOUBLE GUN FROM THE MOST HISTORIC PERIOD OF SHOTGUN DEVELOPMENT.  This Woodward was labeled “THE AUTOMATIC”, and feature a unique hammerless action, often referred to as the “snap-action” that was simple to operate and utterly dependable.  This 139-year-old Woodward is standing proof of the superior design of its time.  Weighing a handy 6lbs. 15oz. and balanced perfectly 1/8” ahead of the hinge pin, this British Best is the measure for all other guns.  Housed in what appears to be the original leather case, with newly reinforced handle and maker’s label, the case is still viable and adds real authenticity to this package.  We have priced this so that YOU can finally afford a true British Best that is fully capable to go afield for your upland pursuits or to the range to shoot sporting clays with your other vintage shooting friends.  Don’t for a minute think that you can’t shoot this gun the way it was meant to be shot, with 2 ½” loads and 1 1/8 ounce of shot or less, and you can do so repetitively for decades to come.  The Damascus barrels are in perfect condition with plenty of wall thickness and not a flaw in them.  THIS ANTIQUE SHOTGUN CAN BE SHIPPED TO AN ADDRESS OF YOUR CHOICE WITH NO FFL REQUIRED.  See the specifications in the tables below and the included Purdey letter.  What an amazing gun, so don’t hesitate or she will be gone.  You rarely see such a gun offered for sale.  There are few left in such fine condition.  Thanks for looking!
