(#158) This is one of the 23,000 manufactured by Asa H. Waters in Millbury, Mass., between 1836-1844. The Model 1836 was the primary handgun of the U.S. Dragoons and Mounted Rifles during the Mexican-American War and many service with state militias. Most were converted to percussion in the 1850s and still more by the Confederate armories at the start of the Civil War. It is generally considered to be the best made and most attractive of all U.S. single shot handguns. This example was converted to percussion using the cone method. The 8-1/2” .54 caliber barrel has a faint “P” inspector mark at the breech. No cartouches are visible on the left side of the stock. The lockplate has the Eagle head over “A. Waters” over “Milbury Mass” over “1838”. The screw is missing from the butt cap and the mainspring is very weak. All original including the swivel ramrod. Very affordable piece of American history.
