Fort Wayne Indiana Small Game & Target Rifle!
Here we present an antique William Leonard Half-Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Leonard’s rifles were often fitted with a “Golcher” lock, such as this one. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .32 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Double set trigger. Barrel tang-mounted peep sight. The top of the barrel is marked with the Leonard’s name and city. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action with crisp double set trigger. Bright, rifled bore. Solid stock. There is a filled crack on the bottom of the fore-end and a stable crack to the left of the barrel tang. There is a portion of the stock behind the barrel tang that has been grafted.
