Description:
****SOLD**** This is a VERY nice and handsome World War 1 production U.S. Military Eddystone Model 1917 Enfield rifle in .30-06 Springfield.  The U.S. Model 1917 Enfield was by far the most widely used rifle by the American Expeditionary Forces in WW1.  While many people think of the Springfield Model 1903 as the main battle rifle used by American forces it was actually the Enfield Model 1917 that was more widely issued and used in combat.  It quickly proved to be a superb weapon, very durable, reliable, and accurate.  The longer sight radius of the M1917 over the 1903 Springfield made it easier to shoot accurately, and the exceptional sights on the 1917 protected by robust steel ears were much better suited to the extremely rough trench warfare conditions of the Great War.  The U.S. Model 1917 Enfield would go on to serve thru the interwar years and would see service in WW2 mainly with non-combat or rear eschelon troops.  This particular Eddystone 1917 was manufactured in October of 1918, and it still has it's original barrel with a September of 1918 date.  While this Eddystone shows a Rock Island Arsenal rework, very little of the gun was actually touched.  It remains nearly all original Eddystone factory parts with the ONLY parts not Eddystone consisting of the front sight and front sight blade which are "R" marked for Remington.  Everything else on this rifle is factory original, including the metal finishes which have NOT been refinished or parkerized.  The factory gloss blue finish on the barrel is in great shape, as-is the factory oil-hardened finish of the receiver, bolt, and stock hardware.  All of the factory markings on the gun are crisp, clean, and 100% visible except for the U.S. Ordnance bomb on the left side receiver rail, which was struck at a slight angle and therefore light at the bottom half.  The bore in this Eddystone is excellent and bright throughout from the chamber to the crown of the muzzle.  The rifling is still sharp and well-defined and there is no visible erosion, pitting, or imperfections.  The sights on this Model 1917 are in great shape, with the front sight's protective ears still intact and square, and the adjustable flip-up ladder rear sight in perfect working order.  The original American Walnut stock set on this Eddystone is in excellent condition overall.  Both the stock and handguard are free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage.  The stock is marked on the left side below the bolt release with the boxed "RIA" rework cartouche, the bottom of the stock is marked with a couple of U.S. Military Eagle Head inspection cartouches and various letters, and the very end of the forearm is marked with a large "E" denoting Eddystone manufacture.  All of the stock hardware is intact, tight, and in good condition from the buttplate to the nose cap with the integral bayonet lug.  The handguard is nice and tight on the gun and is free from any cracks.  The action on this Eddystone 1917 is smooth and precise, and the bolt turns into battery with the barrel with no felt grittiness or excessive drag.  All of the controls on this battle rifle are in perfect working order.  There is no doubt that this Eddystone will function just as reliably and accurately today as the day it left the factory 104 years ago!  If you have been looking for a "collector quality" U.S. Model 1917 for your WW1 or U.S. Military collection, this 1918-manufacture Eddystone would be a superb choice.      ALSO AVAILABLE: A very nice original WW1 Remington U.S. Model 1917 Bayonet with Original Green Leather Scabbard manufactured in 1917.  This bayonet and scabbard is very handsome and in good condition with excellent original 2-groove Walnut grip panels and lots of factory blue finish intact.  A perfect match for this Eddystone Model 1917 Enfield or a Winchester 1897 Trench Gun.  Bayonet and Scabbard priced at $295.00.
