Description:
EARLY 1885 SINGLE SHOT HIGH WALL OCTAGON RIFLE IN .40-65 CALIBER, #23XXX, MADE 1888. This rifle with 30" No.3 octagon barrel is okay as is, or could be made into something better and different. First, the barrel shows good aged blue and is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight (needs elevator bar) and typical Winchester small blade front sight. Markings are all fine. About 5" ahead of the forend are some good sized old dings in the barrel. The bore is surprisingly good with strong rifling and only minor surface corrosion that might brush out better. There is one ring of light pitting about half way down the bore that probably wouldn't affect the shoot-ability of the barrel. The receiver shows a brown-freckled silvery appearance and the action is very tight with a fairly heavy trigger pull. The forend is fine with correct ebony wedge inlay in the schnable tip. The butt stock is an old frontier replacement with what looks like a Model 1873 rifle butt plate with sliding brass trapdoor (the wood is not drilled for cleaning rods underneath). An original 134 year old High Wall with a lot of life left in it as is- or the beginnings of a restored, custom rifle...
