Model 1873 Single Action is fairly close reproduction of the Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver, also known as the Peacemaker. This one is chambered for the modern favorite, the 357 Magnum. The .357 Magnum was originally designed to allow S&W N-frame revolvers to compete with the .38 Super-chambered Colt 1911 pistols in the law enforcement business, specifically in the area of punching through steel car doors and frames used by gangsters and other outlaws in the 1930s. It was also the velocity king of cartridges at the time, surpassing the previous record holder, the 7.63mm Mauser. The .357 Magnum was later found to be useful for hunting deer at close range. It has become very popular for Cowboy Action Shooting as the brass is less expensive to buy than those for old western cartridges such as the .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40. This Single Action Wood has a 4-3/4” barrel. In Old West terminology, this revolver would be considered a “Quickdraw” model, named for its ability to be quickly withdrawn from its holster. There are two other original barrel lengths for an SAA. The Cavalry Model, with a 7.5” barrel, named for its use by the U.S. Cavalry, and the Artillery Model with a 5.5” barrel, again named for its use by a branch of the U.S. Army, in this case the artillery branch. This example is in new in the box. It features a blued steel, Navy-sized grip frame, a beautiful case hardened finish on the cylinder frame and hammer, and a blued barrel and cylinder. The screws, pins, ejector rod and ejector rod housing are also blued. The wood grips have a matte surface finish rather than the usual glossy style. This particular model does not appear on the Taylor’s . Even putting the SKU into the search box on the yields no result. Since it is made by Pietta for Taylor’s and Co., the model can be looked up by Pietta’s own SKU: SA73-006. SOLD Handgun Caliber: .38 Special, .357 Magnum Manufacturer: Taylor's & Co.
