Description:
c1917 CHICAGO SHIPPED COLT Single Action Army .45 Revolver C&R SAA Lettered

Sent to HIBBARD, SPENCER, BARTLETT & Co. CHICAGO, IL

Here we present a C&R Lettered First Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver in .45 Long Colt, manufactured in 1917 in Hartford, Connecticut. This revolver has a factory letter that confirms the configuration of this Colt being .45 caliber Long Colt with a 5-1/2” barrel with a blue finish when it was shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett, & Company in Chicago on January 29, 1917. This company was the leading hardware dealership in Chicago and was the descendant of the Chicago store called Tuttle, Hibbard & Co., which took that name in 1855 when William G. Hibbard became a partner. In 1865, Hibbard was joined by Franklin F. Spencer, and the enterprise was renamed Hibbard & Spencer. By 1867, the company's annual sales of hardware had reached $1 million. When longtime company employee A. C. Bartlett became a partner in 1882, the company's name became Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett & Co. When Spencer died in 1890, the company was already among the leading wholesalers of hardware in the United States.

The Colt “Peacemaker” was introduced in 1873 and has become one of the most iconic firearms in all of history, thanks to its widespread use by the U.S. military, civilians and, more recently, in Western films. Total production numbers for the “First Generation” (c. 1873-1940) Colt Single Action Army reached 357,859. These continued to be relied upon as well as “hot-rodded” by the likes of Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton, many other lawmen and gun writers of the time.

Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

The overall condition is near fine. Old nickel refinish. The action is excellent with 4 clicks and holding all notches. The cylinder indexes and locks up. The bore is clean and reflective with sharp rifling. The grips are replacements—copies of the rampant Colt hard rubber grips. The numbers match.
