Description:
This wonderful gold-plated Factory Virginia LeBlanc engraved Smith & Wesson Pre Model 36 aka Chiefs Special shipped on April 10, 1956 to Rex Firearms in New York, New York. The gun was part of a two unit shipment and is equipped with a 2" barrel, original gold plating, smooth rosewood presentation magna grips and Class A Factory Engraving. These were billed at $175.79 each, though the standard gun could be had for around thirty dollars. One of only a small number of guns engraved by the first female factory engraver, Virginia LeBlanc, this wonderful example is also factory gold plated. Knowledgeable collectors are aware of the extreme rarity of factory gold special orders. Virginia's engraving style emulates that of her mentor Harry Jarvis, though executed with a lighter touch. Note the flowing floral scrollwork against a finely matted punchdot background. A note of interest to other collectors, the escutcheons and medallions on the factory rosewood grips are also gold plated. The gun remains in wonderful condition retaining the majority of factory gold plating showing only the faintest collector type handling wear. Overall an all original and truly special small-frame S&W that will be an instant hit in your collection!
