The Colt Model 1848 Percussion Army Revolver is a .44 caliber revolver designed by Samuel Colt for the U.S. Army's Regiment of Mounted Rifles. The revolver was also issued to the Army's "Dragoon" Regiments. This revolver was designed as a solution to numerous problems encountered with the Colt Walker. Although it was introduced after the Mexican–American War, it became popular among civilians during the 1850s and 1860s and was also used during the American Civil War. The Third Model Dragoon numbers stand at ten thousand from 1851 through 1860. This design had more variations as compared to its earlier counterparts. Some of the third model Colt Dragoon Revolvers had frame cuts for detachable shoulder stocks, horizontal loading lever latches, and folding leaf sights. Third Colt Dragoon Revolvers had a round trigger guard. Government records showed an order for 8,390 Dragoons. This particular example has worn to a warm grey patina over the years. The brass and wood components are in outstanding condition. The original wood grip panels are free of cracks and chips and have been cleaned at some point in the past. The roll engraved scene on the cylinder depicts the Texas Rangers and Native American fight scene is signed W.L. Ormsby (which is very unusual) and is still very visible. The roll engraved scenes are often very worn on these guns to the point of barely being visible. Sights are a "V" notch cut into the hammer for the rear and a simple blade at the front. This example has all 6 of the "half-cocked" pins intact and the hammer is grooved to sit on those pins. The 7 1/2-inch barrel still has a very good bore. All serialized components match. If this gun could talk it would probably have stories that should be documented in the history books. This fine revolver would make a fantastic addition to a Colt collection and a very good investment.
