The US Springfield 1869 cadet 50-70 was a scaled down version of the model 1868 army rifle made for West Point and other military officer schools. The barrel has front and rear sights and the bore has rifling which needs cleaning. Approximately 3500 were made in 1870-71, this one is #712 on the barrel and receiver. The functioning lock is marked US Springfield and dated 1864. Cadet rifles were made without sling swivels. All metal parts are dark brown with scattered pitting.
