Description:
Serial #150, .32 cal., 4" part octagon part round barrel with a heavily pitted bore. The barrel has a simple “wedding band" transition and has a mottled gray-brown patina along its length, with scattered impact marks on the octagonal section as well. The rear top flat is marked "HALE & TULLER / HARTFORD / CONNECTICUT", with a light foliate and angled dot border, and the left side flat is marked, "WARRANTED / CAST STEEL". The action is functional, but the mainspring is weak, and the hammer spur was milled away at some point. The saw handle grip rates about very good with light handling marks and a thin crack across the left side. The number “1741" is faintly scratched into the wood on the left side. The brass grip frame has toned to a mellow ochre patina, with light handling marks and a legible "ER" scratched into the backstrap. There is a small chip missing along the front left of the grip causing the gripstrap to lift slightly. These are very interesting guns that seem to be the product of a commercial partnership between H.J. Hale (a CT gunmaker), Tuller (a Hartford, CT tin and stove merchant), and the Connecticut State Prison. As such, these guns were built by convicts at the prison. This is a seldom seen American pistol, manufactured under highly unusual circumstances. Antique
