This kepi was purchased at an of the lifetime collection of an advanced collector. It was offered simply as a Civil War cap, which it certainly is. The color of this cap is tantalizing. It is the subdued and understated Royal Blue or Steel Blue a shade that is associated with Confederate staff officer caps. This color is rarely found on Union caps, most of which are of course dark blue. This kepi is very similar to several known and documented Confederate officer's kepis. A decade ago a genuine Confederate general's cap with impeccable provenance surfaced and the owner tried in vain to find a buyer in the $20,000.00 range. I refused to pay that much. The owner sent it to Heritage s with a crazy reserve and the cap was sold. I have attached a photo of that cap in the gallery as photo so you can see the similarities. That kepi is in the North Carolina Museum of History. There is a very similar kepi of which I cannot attest to its provenance is currently for sale from a Missouri dealer who insists it is 55th Virginia and has it priced at $23,500.00. To further tantalize us our kepi was made in Baltimore, Maryland where many CSA caps were made. The maker of this piece was Polymore Reiley who is a known cap and hat maker and is Listed in the 1860 Baltimore City Directory. The hunting horn insignia and numeral -3- have been with the cap always and it looks like the Visor may have been reattached. This extremely rare and extraordinary piece of our History will make for an absolutely proper and envious Confederate display.
