Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1926, 20 Gauge, Weight 6lb 3oz; 6lbs 11oz, Chokes M/F; IC/M
Serial Number: 92273

Hunter Arms Company was the maker of the L.C. Smith gun from 1889 until 1945 when Marlin Firearms Company bought them out.  Marlin continued making the only successful American sidelock until a collapse of the factory floor ended the production of the venerable L.C. Smith double gun in 1949.  The Hunter Arms guns were more finely made than the later Marlin era guns and are preferred by most in the know.  The L.C. Smith Ideal Grade being offered here, snFWE92273 built in 1926, represents the first level of their graded, or engraved, gun.  This 20-gauge Ideal Grade was ordered with every available factory option (except the ventilated rib) that included the Hunter One Trigger single selective trigger, ejectors, double ivory beads, beavertail forend, factory pad, and long 30” lightweight barrels.  Based upon my experience and examination, this gun was originally shipped as described above, and the second set of barrels was added at a later date.  It was not uncommon that a double gun would return to the factory for a second set of barrels to provide versatility of use.  By the 1940’s doublegun production was down to almost nothing, so the factory would fill that request with whatever barrels they had in stock to use up existing inventory.  The second set of 26” M/F barrels are actually pre-1913  barrels from a Grade 2E gun.  We bought this two-barrel set as you see it, with the 26” barrels properly fit to the gun.  Both sets of barrels are serial numbered to the gun and numbered #1 and #2, and each have their own forend.  The 26” M/F barrels provide a fast-handling gun for upland birds.  The very graceful, long-barreled, small bore 30” barrels choked IC/M swing nicely for upland and clay target games.  The gun weighs just 6lbs. 3oz. with the 26” tubes, and 6lbs. 11oz. with the 30” barrels and Trap Style beavertail forend.  The gun feels nice in hand and is not “clubby” like some of the later Marlin era L.C. Smith guns.  We have thoroughly gone through every aspect of this gun and it is ready for decades more use.  THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90-DAY WARRANTY, having both forend irons and the action stripped to the smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned, each part inspected for function and integrity, lubricated properly and reassembled, a $375 service in our shop.  The ejectors are strong and timed, the Hunter One Trigger works as designed, the barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breech face, ribs are tight on both sets of barrels.  The chambers are 2 ¾” with extended 1 ½” tapered forcing cones, making for a softer shooting gun and better patterns, a $360 service in our shop.  The wood is in excellent condition, with no cracks or splits, excellent wood-to-metal fit, checkering clean and sharp, modern stock dimensions with 14 1/16” LOP to the rear position single trigger (see specifications below).  There is about 65% factory case color remaining, though thin and fading.  Both sets of barrels have excellent bores, no dents or dings, and 99% blue.  The screws are all excellent and the pad is still soft and pliable.  We have custom fit a high-quality canvas and leather case to the gun and extra barrels, making sure the barrels and action have no movement within the case during travels, each wear area reinforced with leather to keep the case from becoming tattered.  We added the L.C. Smith trade label to the lid and all the usual accessories as shown in the photos.  The case is a $1150 value as shown.  This Ideal Grade 20ga. set is one of only 426 made with 30” barrels and only about 250 had ejectors.  It is a rare chance to own such a versatile and attractive L.C. Smith 2-barrel set for all your shooting needs.  All these features and desirable characteristics are priced affordably, and there is nothing comparable on the market.  Hunting season is around the corner.  This is your new double for the classic shoots and hunts ahead!  Thanks for looking.

Common requests are: -stock bending to suit your particular requirements -addition of any specified butt pad to increase length of pull -alteration of chokes to suit your shooting preferences -lengthening of chambers and forcing cones -darkening stock color with penetrating stains -restoring any part of the gun including rust blue, charcoal blue, bone and charcoal case color, wood restoration and checkering recuts. If you like one our guns but it needs "tweaked", let us know and we can quote you a time and price. Some enthusiasts like the guns "as found" and others want them "just so".
