Payment Types Accepted: Visa,Master Card, Discover,Check Description: This is a really neat antique powder horn with some very nice original scrimshaw engraving on it. The horn measures 13.75" inches long on the outside radius. The large side of the horn has a diameter of 2.5" inches. The scrimshaw consists of a large "Excelsior" Eagle perched on a canon barrel and flag motif and is really well done. The eagle motif shows a lot of really nice detail, including extensive feathering detail. The Excelsior Eagle motif was very popular with the northern Union militias during the Civil War, with many uniform buttons and belt plates featuring the same motif such as the New York Militia. Below the eagle motif the horn is inscribed "John Selfridge 1864 46 Regt Penn Vol Inf". We did some looking at the roster of this reginment and were only able to find an officer named James Selfridge. Cowan's s sold this horn 4 years back and they came up with the same information, except they were able to find a John Selfridge in Co. I, 61st Pennsylvania Infantry. The new owner can have fun doing more research and maybe track him down further. As you can see from the pictures, this horn is in good overall condition but does have a crack that is pictured as well as two small spots of beetle damage. The scrimshaw engraving is in great shape and very visible. This unique and 100% original antique powder horn would be an excellent display piece on a bookshelf or in a gun room. SOLD |
