Description:
British Antique KETLAND Officer’s FLINTLOCK Pistol

.577 Caliber Pistol Made Circa

Here we present an antique W. Ketland & Co. marked Flintlock Pistol, made circa the early 1800s in turn of the century England. Ketland & Co. operated in Birmingham, England, from the late 1700s and to the early 1800s to become one of the most prominent and active British makers of the day. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. The lock plate is marked "W. KETLAND/& Co" ahead of the hammer. The left rear side of the barrel is stamped with pre-1813 proof marks. The barrel, trigger, lock, barrel tang, hammer, frizzen, pan and spring are iron, and the remaining parts are brass. There is a flower engraved on the trigger guard, decorative finial and the initials “RW” inscribed in the thumb oval.

This pistol would have belonged to a military officer during this period. The barrel is octagonal, the stock is full-length and features flats on the sides of the pistol’s grip, and the engravings on the brass are reserved yet handsome. If only this gun could tell us whose initials it bears.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are dark gray with age. The markings are legible. The walnut stock is in very nice condition with the handling marks you would expect. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. This is a handsome weapon that would have been a cut above the standard.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 9 inches.

Caliber: .577
