Description:
This Marlin Model 1881 rifle is a standard rifle configuration, with a 28” octagonal barrel, standard sights and a round magazine tube. It has been refinished at some point in the past and is now aged enough to present a pleasing overall appearance. All metal parts were re-blued (less the lever) and the barrel was polished to the point that the Marlin address is dim; the magazine tube was not polished (?) and displays some pock marks along it’s sides. The wooden stocks were refinished with a nice gloss finish and the wood to metal fit is quite acceptable. The rifle is chambered in .40-60 Marlin, which is dimensionally the same cartridge as the .40-65 Winchester. Lever and trigger function very well. Note that the original cartridge loading dust cover has been replaced. The bore is good, slightly dark with strong rifling. Overall, the rifle presents itself very well.
However, the Marlin 1881 cartridge elevator has two spring fingers that hold the fresh cartridge prior to injection into the chamber; note that this rifle has one of the two elevator springs partially broken off. This will cause an intermittent cartridge jam. I am not a gunsmith and have I have priced the rifle accordingly!
