Description:
Original Ambrose Lawing "3/4 stock" Tennessee percussion rifle with a 41 inch long .36 caliber barrel.  It has distinct Lawing features, especially the tang, stock profile, buttplate, triggers, trigger guard, muzzle, sites and original ramrod with Lawing "worm".  The rifle has not been shortened.  The muzzle is decorated with Lawing's distinct marking.  This rifle is signed and dated but I cannot make out the year.  It is the only known Lawing rifle with this type of trigger guard which is brass overlaid on the iron trigger guard.  There are a few other known Tennessee rifles with this distinct brass overlay trigger guard.  There are a few examples by members of Gross family. Additional photos available. This is not a re-stocked rifle.

Lawing is considered one of the best of the Tennessee Gunmakers, his distinct architecture makes his rifles elegant and graceful.

Ambrose Lawing, b. 1826, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; d. (of TB) 4 Jul 1872 (aged 45–46) Flag Pond, Unicoi County, Tennessee. During the Civil War he served as armorer in Company B, 3rd NC Mounted Infantry (USA).
