GREAT WAR Dated 1917 IMPERIAL GERMAN LUGER
Here we present a C&R World War I Dated German DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) Pistole Parabellum P.08 Military Luger Pistol, made in 1917 in Berlin, Germany. Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical and productive fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end.
The Luger is certainly one of the most iconic firearms in history, made so by its association with being carried by German troops during both World Wars and is perhaps the most associated with those events. The top of the chamber is Great War dated “1917”. The “Crown over N” proof mark is marked on the pistol. The Crown over N is a German pre-World War II proof mark used before April 1, 1940. The "N" indicates that the gun has been proofed with "nitro" or smokeless powder. The top of the toggle is marked “DWM”. The right side of the barrel extension has the three “Crown/Script” proofs next to the Imperial Eagle proof.
The overall condition is near fine. Refinished. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid. Many of the numbers match, some are force matched, and some are non-matching.
