For Sale: WJ Jeffery .404 Jeffery Best Sporting Rifle
I am selling a few select rifles out of my personal collection. This one is a very fine W.J. Jeffery big bore bolt action rifle in the venerable .404 Jeffery cartridge. Some say that the .404 Jeffery is the perfect Safari rifle cartridge as it is hard hitting and soft shooting while adequate for hunting a wide range of animals from plains game to elephant.
This particular example is built on a prewar magnum square bridge action and bottom metal. It was made circa 1925-30. Prewar Jeffery 404s on a magnum square bridge actions are rare. This one features a 24” barrel with a hooded bead front sight with a rear sight featuring one standing and two folding leaves at 100/200/300 yds respectively, mauser flag safety with gold inlaid “S”, buffalo horn forend tip and border engraved metal grip cap.
LOP is 14-3/4" the weight is 8lbs 12 oz. Perfectly suited for this caliber. Exceptionally nice wood and very nice overall condition. It has been used but certainly well cared for over the years.
It is slim and trim as a good British sporter should be and it is very handy to the shoulder. Also features original trapdoor steel butt plate and has never been drilled for any sort of scope mounts or other alterations. This is an exceptional unmolested example of a classic British big game rifle in a wonderful big bore cartridge executed by its namesake British maker. These don't come up for sale often.
