1 of less than 300 Early 1900s Rifles Manufactured
Here we present a C&R Remington Rolling Block Model 4 “Cadet Model” Rifle in .22 Rimfire Short, Long or Long Rifle, made circa 1912 in Ilion, New York. This Cadet Model was the least known variation of the No. 4 rifle. In the January 16-18, 1912 Sales Convention minutes, a Mr. Johnson asked the Remington sales force to send him suggestions on marketing the new Cadet rifle. Advertised only in 1912, less than 300 of these rifles are estimated to have been manufactured in takedown configuration and are incredibly hard to find, especially in as nice of condition as this example.
The No. 4 Cadet rifle should not be confused with the larger caliber cadet rifles marketed by M. Hartley & Company at the turn of the century utilizing Remington Model 1866 Navy pistol frames, Remington No. 1-1/2 sporting rifle frames, and Remington No. 2 sporting rifle frames. Nor should the No. 4 Cadet rifle be mistaken for the better known No. 4 Boy Scout and No 4 Military Model rifles which followed this rifle.
This rifle was modeled after Remington’s famous military rifle of which 1,600,000 were sold. It was marketed as “A wonderfully perfect little rifle, accurate, simple and graceful, and especially designed for military schools and organizations.”, dated 1912.
The No. 4 Cadet rifle shared many standard features with the No. 4 Sporting rifle at the time, except it had a 28 inch round barrel, an extended wood forend, sling swivels, an adjustable leather sling strap, and an unmarked, case hardened receiver. The model designation wasn’t stamped on the rifle.
The overall condition is good+. Original blue and case-colored finish. The action is excellent. The takedown lever tends to want to walk which loosens the barrel to frame fit. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The walnut stock is in good condition: smooth and solid with use apparent.
