Fine Untouched Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver with period holster ; 1864 Hartford, CT Production/Commercial Sales; Barrel: 7 1/2" Round; Capacity: Six Shots .36 Cal.
Fine and matching Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver...manufactured at the Hartford factory in 1864 for commercial sale, presumably on the domestic market. This is a strong example of Colt's premier, Civil War-era percussion pistol. Composed of all-matching numbered components, including the wedge and interior of the one-piece piano-varnished Walnut grip. The revolver has standard features, consisting of unfluted, six-shot cylinder chambered for .36 Cal., 7 1/2" round barrel roll-stamped with the New York address, loading lever beneath, nickel-silver blade front sight, the rear sight is a notch at the end of the hammer, the spur of which is cut with bordered knurling on top. Markings include 'COLT'S PATENT' on the left of the frame, and the roll-engraved Texas Navy cylinder scene which remains remarkably crisp with legible text around the edge and 90% definition overall. The finish combines Colt's bright commercial blue on the barrel and cylinder with case hardened frame, loading lever and hammer, the screws, and trigger are nitre blued, the brass trigger guard and backstrap were silver plated at the factory. The whole remains in a fine state of preservation, apart from the silver plating, of which mere traces remain in the most protected areas. Clearly having seen some use, the gun displays mild, honest wear, possibly having been carried as a soldier, NCO or officer's privately purchase arm for a short period during the war, and apparently retired shortly after its conclusion. A favorite of collectors, the 1861 is widely regarded as the finest of Colt's percussion guns and was made in far fewer numbers than the 1851 Navy. A fine example that would be a worthy addition to any advanced collection.
Condition
Fine, the gun has seen no restoration or refinish, with strong flashes of nitre blue on the trigger and several of the screws. The commercial blue on the barrel is trending toward a frosty hue over gunmetal patina, the frame is a dark plum over bronze with brown and red mixed in and visible case hardening patterns visible under light. The cylinder shows strong commercial blue mixed with streaks of brown, remaining at 20-30% overall. Remaining silver plating consists of small patches around the screw holds, The frame and backstrap are otherwise a rich golden rod tone. Blemishes are present in the form of oxidation on the barrel, likely from holstering, a few traces of minor pinprick pitting on the frame, and light powder flash abrasion around the nipples on the cylinder. Additionally, the front sight may have been reduced slightly during the period of use. No rust or active pitting is observed on any metal surface. Apart from the serial numbers on the frame and barrel, which were lightly-struck, the markings are correct, all remain crisply-edged, none have been buffed, and all numbers are matching. The grip is good to very good, with each half marked at the bottom with four punch-dots(their meaning is unknown), there is some shrinkage around the bottom, as well as a deep scratch on the base of the right panel, and a 1/8" nick out of the toe of the left panel. No cracks, other chips or repairs are noted. Mechanically flawless, the action is smooth, the cylinder indexes properly, the hammer holds full and half cock firmly, and all nipples are clear. The bore is graded as very good relative to the vintage, with strong, sharply-edged rifling, moderate powder flash abrasion, light residue and moderate frost.
