Description:
Serial #220, 12mm Perrin CF, 6" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some traces of freckling within the grooves. This is a "PERRIN / & CIE BTE" and "(sunburst) / PARIS"-marked revolver with matching numbers on the barrel, frame, and cylinder. The metal has retained about 80-85% of an old nickel finish with dark spots of pitting and surface oxidation scattered throughout, but heaviest on the left side of the frame and on the domed buttcap. All markings are crisp and clear, and the edges are still quite sharp. The serpentine safety spring is missing from the left side of the frame, however the action remains functional. The walnut grip is in good shape, but has been sanded smooth and has an added varnish finish throughout. The wood is numbered "120" at the butt and also has a penciled name, presumably a previous owner: "MIESTEAD". The Perrin was an extremely advanced revolver for the time and fired a 12mm centerfire cartridge via a double-action only mechanism, similar to the contemporary Model 1851 Adams patent. During the Civil War, Alexis Godillot (who had offices in both New York and Paris) contracted with the US Government for the sale of 1,000 Perrin revolvers and ammunition, eventually delivering 550 guns in three shipments in 1862 before the balance of the order was cancelled. This is one of the most rarely encountered Civil War revolvers, and represents a great opportunity for the collector to acquire a very scarce example. Antique
