This specific pistol was issued to Brigadier General Raymond M. Jacobson in February 1980, when he achieved the rank. The history behind these guns is fascinating. When RIA was about to deplete their stock of Colt 1903 .32 ACP pistols for general officer use, the military was looking for a replacement. Rock Island Arsenal proposed the idea of taking surplus 1911’s in inventory and customizing them for General Officer issue. Other pistols such as the Walther P1 were tested and considered, but ultimately RIA’s proposal was accepted. Only 1054 of the M15 General Officer pistols were ever produced, making them a rare and desirable military collectable firearm. #GO890 appeared to have been a Remington Rand 1911A1 before it was converted to General Officer duty. BG. Raymond Jacobson, a lawyer, was involved in national Democratic politics well into his eighties, working in an official capacity at every Democratic convention from 1960 to 2012. He volunteered as an advance man for such presidential and vice-presidential candidates as Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Joe Lieberman. He also worked as a legislative aide to Reps. James R. Jones of Oklahoma and Frank Guarini of New Jersey, and for the International Trade Commission, the International Trade Administration, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mr. Jacobson served on active duty for the Army in Korea shortly after the end of hostilities in the Korean War. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve until the early 1980s, commanding the 352nd Civil Affairs Command in Riverdale, Md., and receiving his brigadier general's star in 1980.
