Description: Guns Listing ID: 641140 War tends to bring forth great innovation at a quick pace. WWI brought about great innovation in the battle rifle. The British SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield) was an improvement over the overly long rifles of the time that served well with outdated tactics like line volley fire and cavalry defense. Towards the onset of WWI, the battle rifle would see an explosion in the development and innovation pathway for the infantry soldier. New technologies, material availability, and a new style of war would further develop the Lee-Enfield rifle. In early 1913, the push for an upgraded design for the Lee-Enfield No. 1 MK III* was put into the works. The upgrade would retain the fast, cock-on-close, action of the Lee-Enfield rifle, while eliminating the removeable magazine, bayonet hood, and outdated tangent rear sights that were mounted forward on the rifle. By 1914, the British had settled on the 1914 Pattern Enfield, also referred to as the P14 or the military designation of No. 3 MK I rifle. This rifle featured an adjustable and precise rear sight, an extremely well-built strong bolt lock-up system, and a simple bayonet. These rifles were unable to go into production in the U.K. as the company Vickers could not tool up and keep up with demand. The manufacturing contracts for these rifles were sent over to Remington, Eddystone, and Winchester. Unfortunately, there was never any high scale production for the British rifles, as many were lost in the Atlantic during shipping, and British financing and manufacturing was still very hung up on the No.1 MK III* Enfields. Prior to US involvement in WWI, the US knew that there were not enough rifles to outfit the military leading to a contract to produce the US Model of 1917, a version of the P14 rifle. In fact, at the time of WWI troop deployment, more soldiers had Model of 1917 rifles than 1903 Springfields, even though it was never officially adopted as the main service rifle.
