This is an extremely rare Colt. The Colt Burgess Rifles is not common by any means, special order deluxe rifles are virtually impossible. Approximately only 111 special ordered Colt Burgess Rifles were ordered. Out of the 111, only 16 had the feature of a color case hardened frame. Out of the 16, how many exist still? I know of 1 other and it’s a completely restored rifle. The seller wants over $50,000 for that example. This example has traces of the color case hardening on the frame. The barrel shows a patina finish. The barrel address is still sharp. The deluxe butt stock shows normal use of the period. The deluxe forearm shows the typical crack at the right front near the frame, that was a big design flaw on the Burgess Rifle. The left side of the frame shows the excellent Rampart Colt design. Mechanically this rifle functions fine, however the lever is a bit loose when the hammer is cocked and droops. On a piece truly this rare, one must sometimes overlook lesser condition, out of the 16 made, how many exist? And how many of those that exist could truly be better condition? And the biggest question, how to find another example, let alone have it be in finer condition and have it be for sale. This is a huge hole filler in almost all Colt collections! If this doesn’t sell relatively soon, I may very well pull it off the market and put it away in my collection as my hole filler example! Buyer to pay actual shipping and insurance cost. Thank you!
