CAROLINA Marked U.S. Contract WHITNEY M1816/22 FLINTLOCK Musket EXTREMELY RARE South Carolina SURCHARGED MUSKET Here we present a Rare Antique South Carolina Surcharged WhitneyArms Co. U.S. Contract Model 1816/1822 Flintlock Musket, manufactured circa 1836 at the Whitney Armory in New Haven, Connecticut. Philos & Eli Whitney Blake were the nephews of Eli Whitney Sr. and were believed to be the trustees of the Whitney Armory from 1823 until Eli Whitney Jr. coming of age in 1842. This is the improved version of the U.S. Model 1816 that was manufactured by the Whitney Armory from 1822 to 1841 under two contracts with the U.S. government. This is a second contract musket and is dated “1836” on the lock with an ”1832” date on the tang. There were 24,000 muskets made under this contract in the 1830s through 1841. Many of these muskets were converted to percussion just prior to the Civil War. Though this musket was 35 years old when the war broke out, it was still a great musket and much higher quality than many of the imports that would be purchased in Europe and issued stateside. This musket is marked “So. CAROLINA.” on the left side of the brass lock escutcheon and “SC” on the top of the buttplate. This is an extremely rare example and is highly likely that this musket was carried by a South Carolina Confederate soldier in the early years of the American Civil War. The overall condition is very good. It has been reconverted in a well-done manner. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and dim. The markings are clear. The walnut stock has some thin and stable cracks on the bottom of the butt stock. A very nice piece! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 42 inches. Caliber: .69 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
