JOHNSON U.S. Model 1836 .54 Caliber Smoothbore PERCUSSION Pistol MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Conversion Pistol, Dated 1843 Here we present an antique Robert Johnson U.S. Model 1836 Percussion Pistol, made in 1843. This pistol would have started out as a flintlock and had a period conversion as the new technology developed. The Second Seminole War erupted in December of 1835 and both the newly authorized 2nd US Dragoons and the many mounted state militia troops that were sent to swamps of Florida to deal with the situation were in need of pistols. The U.S. arsenals were in short supply at this time, and what they did have, were obsolete. Consequently, two manufacturers, Robert Johnson and Asa Waters, were contracted to make these new pistols with combined production totals were 41,000 guns. As a result of the need to arm the U.S. Dragoons, state militia troops being called up for the war, and to catch up on backordered requisitions for pistols from the states under the Militia Act of 1808, extreme pressure was applied to both the contractors to deliver the guns and the U.S. ordnance inspectors to approve them for service. Publication of the Ordnance Regulations of 1834 specified that a minimum of two Ordnance Inspectors must view and mark all contract ordnance. On this gun, there are two oval script cartouches on the left stock flat. This was the last U.S. martial pistol to use the flintlock system, and many consider this the best of all U.S. flint guns due to its craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. The gun is historically significant as this was the primary issue pistol during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) and was even significantly used during the American Civil War (1861-1865), especially in this percussion converted format. Many of these were lost to attrition during the various conflicts listed above, and many were converted for use, as is this one, by the North & South during the Civil War. The overall condition is good. Gray patina. Two good cartouches. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock has a crack under the lock and a very thin one on the left stock flat. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.
