Description:
FINAL PRICE REDUCTION (before ad expires and I keep it!) Fusil Gras Modèle 1874 Cavalry Carbine Rifle

For your consideration is a very nice antique French rifle.
The Gras Model 1874 was the service rifle of the French military during the second half of the19th century.  The Gras was a breach-loading single shot rifle and was the first purpose-built French rifle to use a metallic cartridge succeeding the needle-fire Chassepot paper-cartidge firing rifle.  The Gras was France’s last black powder rifle and would be replaced in 1886 by the Lebel.  The Gras rifle under consideration is the cavalry or “cut-down” version of the long infantry rifle.

The receiver is marked MANUFACTURE D'ARMES / St. Etiénne / M80, Modelle 1874.
Rifle has a manufacture date of 1881 and has non-matching serial numbers. This particular example spent the last century or so of its life in Ethiopia and includes interesting Amharic symbols and writing as provenance of that fact.

The rifle has the correct turned-down cavalry bolt handle and very nice brass barrel bands, trigger guard, and butt plate.  For a 140 year-old rifle it is in amazingly good condition as you can see.  There is some pitting on metal, but it appears to be very solid.  Wood furniture is in very nice condition except for a gouge near end of the barrel (please see pic).  Rifle actions flawlessly.  Bore is dark but appears to have rifling and should be a descent shooter once checked by competent gunsmith. Gras 11 mm ammunition for this rifle is available from producers online!  It is an honest example of a rare, long-historied rifle.

No FFL required for this antique.  Rifle can be shipped directly to those 18 years or older who may legally own it.
