Mid-1800 Homestead Rifle with DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS
Here we present an antique J.W. Crook Signed Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the late 1850s to the early 1860s. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. This is one such example.
This rifle features a large trigger guard and is designed to be used as a pistol grip. This rifle features double set triggers that provide an extremely light and crisp break. The barrel is 35 inches long and octagonal with a rifled .40 caliber bore.
The overall condition is good. Original patina has been preserved on the barrel. The action is strong, lock is a replacement. Bright bore, worn rifling. This example sports a solid stock that contains less than average wear. “JW CROOK” is hand inscribed on the top of the barrel.
