Description:
Spencer carbine made in 1864 according to Roy Marcot book on Spencers.  Very nice condition, bore very good, stock very good except for a small chip where reciever meets butt stock on top edge (as seen in picture), very nice clear ESA cartouche on left side by sling ring (as seen in picture).
Gun was reworked by the Spring Field Armoury, at which time the bore was changed from a 6 groove rifling to a 3 groove  rifling.  The armoury upgraded the gun at that time.  A stabler cut off  was added.  Stock and forearm were repaired or replaced with new ones, which obliterated the original cartouche.  The metal parts were repaired or replaced.  Original markings on top of recievers were often obliterated during the refinihing process.of polishing which included blueing and recase hardening the frame.  A new inspectors cartouche was stamped on referbished 1860 carbine stocks.  The most frequent abserved is the Spring Field master armour Erskine S Allin thus the ESA cartouche (see page 120 of the Roy Marcot book).
