Description:
At is a very well preserved 102 year old Colt single action revolver.  According to its letter it was produced in 1920 and at that time was issued with a 7 1/2 inch barrel and a blue finish.  It remains that way today.  Its finish is 96% or better and the case hardening has slightly dulled with age but the varied colors remain distinct.  The only blemish seen on the pistol are a few very light scratches on the lateral aspect of the cylinder along with a nearly indistinct cylinder line.  The bore is mint and the action is nice with a crisp no creep let off at around 1 1/2 pounds.  All the serial numbers match and the bore lines up exactly with each cylinder hole when cocked according to a bore scope.  The lock up is tight in all cylinder positions.  The grips now on the gun are nicely aged stag but the original grips so marked will come with the gun.  The 38/40 caliber was originally designed for some of the early Winchester rifles during the black powder era but by the mid 1880's this caliber was appearing in quite a few pistols of the time.  The caliber evolved as a result of a needed lower recoiling handgun that still had significant power.  Many frontier people actually preferred this caliber over the way more common .45 Colt used by the millitary during this period. I have test fired the pistol using 8 grains of Unique powder behind a 230 grain round nose cast bullet.  This load patterns a little less than 2 inches at 25 yards off a sand bag rest.  It shoots to the exact point of aim.  The pistol would no doubt attract attention in any Colt collection.  Hopefully my pictures will support my contentions.  I'll try and answer any questions that might arise.  Always remember that the condition and history of a piece will dictate its value way more than all other aspects in any firearms collection and not the blue book.  Thanks much for taking a look.
