EARLY AND SCARCE LARGE FRAME WHITNEY-KENNEDY LEVER RIFLE IN DESIRABLE .45-60 CALIBER, #E 8XX, MADE 1879-1883. All Whitney-Kennedy rifles are scarce with the large frame significantly less common than the medium frame models in "pistol calibers." This example has the early "S" lever which was only made into 1883. The last three years of production saw Whitney use the Winchester style loop lever. It is interesting to note that these were such well built rifles that Winchester bought them out and then halted production to avoid competition with their rifles! This example was obviously well taken care of as the bore is bright and minty. The receiver is a mixture of light aged blue mixing brown and fine aged blue that shows some minor edge freckling on the 28" oct. barrel, mag tube aged brown, buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact, Rocky Mountain long blade/bead front sight. Fine stock and forend made of better than standard walnut showing nice figure showing only normal handling and some dings. There is an inletted military style sling swivel in the butt stock that appears original. Excellent screws, fine blue on the loading gate, tight action, tight wood to metal fit, a truly fine example in a desirable caliber with great bore that came out of here in Montana.
