ANTIQUE SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45 COLT, 4 3/4" BARREL, #179XXX, MADE 1898. This one turned up right here in Bozeman, Montana some time ago. The owner said it came out of Billings, Montana, but didn't have any other info on it. A Colt letter might prove interesting. I liked this one from first seeing it as it simply has that "honest" cowboy look about it. The overall metal surfaces have a deep brown patina that hasn't been cleaned or steel-wooled. with the case colored receiver having turned dark also. During its life, it's had some light rust here or there that was obviously just wiped off with an oily rag, but not scrubbed. Matching numbers, correct two line barrel address, fine screw heads and unaltered front sight. The action is fine with only the very first click on the hammer gone. The grips fit perfectly and are worn to the same extent of the rest of the gun and I have no doubt they are original to it. The bore is dark with good rifling and some light surface roughness. Overall an attractive antique Single Action in classic .45 Colt caliber that no doubt saw frontier use in Montana.
