The introduction of the SMLE (Short Magazine Lee-Enfield) series was an evolutionary change in the standard issue rifle for infantry units. Prior to WWI, the standard issue rifle was long and cumbersome, however, with evolving tactics and new technologies in powder and cartridge developments, the Lee-Enfield rifles featured shorter barrels and higher capacities than just about any other rifle that was available at the time. The NO.4 MKI was the WWII era iteration of the No.4 rifle and it featured full-length aperture sights, a simplified production process, an elimination of certain features to save on materials and weight, and a new bayonet that was smaller and lighter for the soldier. The later MKII version of the NO.4 saw service in the U.K. for many decades and even remained in service with commonwealth countries into the late 1990’s.
