FINE Mid-1800s FOWLING PIECE
Here we present an antique Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Shotgun, made circa the 1850s. This example has quality workmanship and shows little sign of wear. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead. This is a very nice fowling piece that is elegant with its engravings and in its simplicity and practicality.
This shotgun has a very nice aesthetic. It has barrels that begin octagonal at the breech with some flutes cut into the corners, then transitions to round. Damascene twist. The locks, tangs, trigger guard, and other hardware are neatly engraved. The stock is checkered at both the wrist and the forearm area. The original ramrod has the capped worm at the end. The underside of the barrels is marked “Crown/R” and “Crown/T”, while each lock is marked “Crown/W”. “ELG” and Perron proofed.
The overall condition is fine. Original finish with Damascus Twist pattern still evident. The actions are excellent. The bores are reflective and smooth. The stock is smooth and solid.
