Description: From my long time personal collection of law enforcement shotguns comes this exceptionally rare authentic coach/guard gun made by the Ithaca Gun Company for Wells Fargo & Co. Express in June 1909. Wells Fargo marked coach guns are probably the single most faked arms of the Wild West era however 750 special order doubles manufactured by Ithaca for the firm between 1909-1917 are the only which can truly be proven genuine. This early example was ordered with 26" cylinder bore barrels in 12 Gauge and is built on a massive extra heavy frame. The barrels measures nearly 2 3/4" across at the breech and 3/8" thick! Even with relatively short barrels the gun weighs a formidable 10 lbs 2 oz. The left side of the frame is marked "ITHACA GUN CO. ITHACA N.Y." with "W. F. & CO. EX. A. 199" factory inscribed on the right. A pointing dog is stamped above on both sides. The barrels retain 75% original bluing turned plum at the muzzles with distinct rack wear about mid-way on both sides. The frame has turned a rich chocolate patina thinning to gray along the edges. The stock shows heavy wear with a great untouched look and numerous old surface mars throughout. The butt is painted red undoubtedly by Wells Fargo for some specific identification purpose. There is a tight old 1" crack in the wood behind the frame on either side with a thin worn chip along the forward left edge of the forearm. Checkered steel buttplate with matching original hammers. The front sight bead is missing and the head of the right hammer screw is broken. Both actions are perfectly crisp and function flawlessly. Both original rebounding firing pins are present and freely moving however the striking tip of the right pin is broken. The barrels securely open and snap shut like a vault with no play whatsoever. Bright smooth bores with fine surface scratching throughout and some very subtle tiny dings scattered at the muzzles. Matching serial number "186662" stamped on the frame, barrels, and twice on the forearm with "X 12" marked on the water table. A copy of a 1972 letter from the Ithaca Gun Company is included which outlines the original Wells Fargo orders and confirms this gun as one of twenty delivered in June 1909 with Wells Fargo identification number "A199".
