Description:
This is a very cool and handsome all-original World War 1 British Military Webley Mark VI pistol.  The Webley Mark 6 (VI) service revolver was officially adopted by the British Military in 1915.  The Mark VI was chambered in the British Military standard .455 Webley cartridge and was an improved and refined version of the earlier Marks made by Webley.  The most prominent change of the heavy-duty Mark VI was a new full-size flared grip pattern instead of the bird's head style used on the earlier guns.  The front sight was now pinned-in to the barrel rather than integral to the gun, allowing for much easier zeroing by simply replacing the front sight blade with various heights until the gun was zeroed.  The Mark VI also featured a standard barrel length of 6" inches rather than the 4" inch barrel most often seen on the earlier models.  As WW1 was already raging, The British Government put in an open order for as many Mark VI revolvers as possible.  Webley ended up manufacturing about 253,000 examples before WW1 ended, starting at serial number 153,000 and ending at 406,000.  Despite WW1 being over Webley continued to produce the Mark VI with the post-war guns reaching a serial number range in the neighborhood of 430,000. The Mark VI proved to be a superb military sidearm, extremely durable, exceptionally reliable, very accurate, and very easy to operate while in combat.  The Webley Mark VI was very well-liked by the British soldiers that carried them and also well-liked by the Americans that served alongside the British.  Many of the Mark VI revolvers in the States today were brought home by AEF soliders after the war ended.  This particular example is serial number 404,122, manufactured during the last year of the war in 1918.  It has been professionally converted to .45 ACP, likely shortly after it entered the United States.  The conversion was very simple and consisted of machining a small portion off of the rear face of the cylinder allowing for clearance of .45 ACP ammo on half or full-moon clips.  This was a very popular thing to do as surplus U.S. Military .45 ACP ammo was very plentiful and cheap, while .455 Webley was much harder to come by and much more expensive at that time (and remains so today!).  Outside of that modification, this Mark VI is 100% original and matching.  The original military blue finish still shows up nicely in numerous places on this gun, with the balance showing a brown-blue patina.  As you can see from the pictures, there is only some scattered very-shallow and light pitting in spots, to be expected on a combat-used/WW1-issued revolver.  The vast majority of the gun is smooth and slick, only showing some machine marks and polishing lines.  All of the factory markings and British Military proofs are in excellent condition and fully-legible.  This Webley is NOT IMPORT MARKED.  The stamped serial numbers on this Mark VI are all original and matching, including the frame, barrel, and cylinder (as only the bottom 1/4 of the that serial number is gone from the cylinder modification, it is still fully legible).  The factory lanyard loop is still in-place and spins properly as-designed.  The bore in this Webley is superb, showing a mirror-bright sheen and sharp rifling throughout the 6" inch barrel.  There is no visible erosion, pitting, or imperfections of any kind visible.  The six chambers of the cylinder are equally as clean and bright, free from any damage or pitting.  The original black checkered Vulcanite grips on this revolver are in very good condition overall, showing only some light handling marks and wear.  The worst of the deductions from the grips is on the left grip panel near the bottom where a small chip is missing.  The condition of the grips match the rest of the gun, exactly what you would want to see.  Both grip panels are tight to the frame with no wiggle, and both grips match each other perfectly in color.  This Webley locks up together nice and tight with ZERO play between the two halves.  The automatic ejector cycles perfectly, the top latch has strong spring pressure, and the auto-rebounding hammer works properly  The action on this Webley is very smooth but with a relatively heavy trigger pull.  This was designed this way as there were no safety mechanisms on this gun; a light trigger would have resulted in more accidents.  The action is perfectly "in time" no matter how fast or slow it is worked, double or single-action.  At full-lock with the trigger pulled to the rearward position the cylinder locks up nicely with just a tiny bit of play.  This Webley Mark VI should function just as well today as it did when it left the factory 104 plus years ago!  If you have been looking for a WW1 British Military Webley that looks like it saw action but is still in perfect mechanical condition this 1918 Webley Mark VI would be the perfect choice.  This Webley could be enjoyed as BOTH a long-term investment as well as a fun shooter on occasion.
NOTE: We do have some .45 ACP moon clips that will fit this gun in stock for an additional cost.
