Description:
SCARCE GREAT DEPRESSION ERA MODEL '94 CARBINE, .30WCF, #1072XXX, MADE 1931. These interesting transition carbines are more rare than most Winchester collectors realize. For comparison, in 1927 Winchester produced 29,967 Model 1894s, in 1913 57,586 were made. In 1931 Winchester manufactured only 2,400 Model 94s! and in 1934 (one of the worst years of the Great Depression), only 1,192 were made.  By 1941 America had recovered enough for Winchester to produce 48,883 '94s! Model '94s of this 1930s vintage retain all the features of the classic saddle ring carbines except for the ring. The stocks have the early style carbine butt plates (later changed to shotgun butt plates) an the rear sight is still the carbine ladder style instead of the later buckhorn style. Craftsman ship on these 1930s rifles and carbines was second to none as only the best gunsmiths were retained by Winchester during these tough economic times. This is a great example with fine deep barrel and mag blue, excellent barrel and upper tang markings, correct rear sight with slide intact. The receiver shows typical for this era  flaking on the edges. receiver ring and bottom with fine blue on the loading gate and bolt. The left side of the receiver shows good blue with thinning/flaking while the right side shows more flaking. the butt stock is excellent, is of a higher than standard grade walnut and shows fine, tight wood to metal fit. The forend is also excellent and shows little handling. THE BORE IS MINTY BRIGHT. Excellent screws and tight action. A really fine and interesting limited production carbine from one of the more difficult times in American history.
