It actually started life as a 10/22 Charger Pistol (Model 04923). It was customized heavily and is now a rifle. Bear in mind federal law does not prohibit turning a pistol into a rifle as long as a barrel 16.0 inches or longer is fitted first, before a stock is installed. The 10/22 was introduced in 1964 and became an immediate success. As proof of this, the standard model has been in continuous production since its introduction. Designed as an adult rifle, the 10/22’s light weight, good balance, low recoil, and inexpensive ammo have made it more than suited as a means to teach youth how to shoot a semi-automatic rifle. Indeed, today it is thought of as the go-to rifle for parents to present to their children. However, this is not the 10/22’s only purpose. Many use it for hunting small varmints, particularly squirrels. With a good scope, this rifle can be used against small game to a respectable distance. The 10/22 has also found a home in rimfire target shooting competitions. One of the 10/22’s other advantages, is the prolificacy of aftermarket accessories. There are thousands of options for those wanting to customize their Ruger. These include such modifications as extended magazines, extravagant stocks, and even kits designed to alter the rifle’s appearance to, for example, that of a WWII M1 carbine (I have also seen one that gives the rifle the appearance of a German MG 42 light machine gun). This 10/22 is good shape and has been fitted with some very high quality aftermarket parts. The one example is the KIDD Innovative Design Stainless Match Bull Barrel. These barrels are bored and rifled by Lothar Walther in Germany. Tony Kidd then performs the final machining and hand-laps the barrel. The barrel has a match chamber and uses the standard 1:16” twist rate. The muzzle has an 11 degree crown as well. Outside diameter of the barrel is a thick 0.92 inches. Pull weight of the trigger is around 3.5 – 4.0 lbs. An extended charging handle has also been fitted, as well as an 11-slot picatinny atop the receiver for mounting a scope and rings. The barrel itself exhibits some faint mars in the finish. The bore is very clean with no rust or pitting present. There is a small spot of finish wear in the receiver’s ejection port. The Hogue synthetic stock has very light handling wear. The rifle is currently fitted with a BX-25 25-round magazine. The bore is fairly clean though it could use a good cleaning. The rifle does come with a nice hard case (non-factory). For those looking for a nice rimfire target rifle, this Ruger 10/22 is the perfect choice.
