Description:
Antique MARTINI-HENRY MUSCAT Single Shot .577/450 Cal FALLING BLOCK Carbine

BELGIAN MADE With Afghanistan “BRING BACK” Paper

Here we present an antique Martini-Henry Single Shot Falling Block Military Rifle made circa 1885 in Liege, Belgium with somewhere between 500,000 and 1,000,000 produced worldwide. The first iteration of the rifle came about in 1871 and was adopted by the British Army to replace the Enfield Snider Breech Loading Rifles that were being phased out. The action is based on the patent by American and Boston native Henry O. Peabody, which was improved by Swiss inventor Friedrich von Martini. The new polygonal barrel rifling was the design of Scotsman Alexander Henry. This is where the rifle derives its name. Martini–Henry variants were used throughout the British Empire for 47 years. Like other British weapons, the Peabody-Martini-Henry saw action all over the world, and most famously in the Zulu Wars in Africa.

This example is not British, although it follows the British Cavalry Carbine design. This gun is a Belgian made carbine for the Islamic market of the Middle East. The top of the barrel is marked “MARTINI/MUSCAT”. The action on both sides and along the top of the barrel has been decoratively engraved and features Arabic writing on the left side plate. Martinis built or engraved for the Muscat market are almost always Belgian, although surplus British Martinis were imported as well, and they are usually well-made. In fact, Martinis seem to be one of the firearms which fared quite well in the Belgian trade - as compared with such firearms as their notorious "Belgian bridge" Navy Colt copies, or copies of the break-open .44 Smith and Wessons, which depended on more delicate parts than the European military revolvers.

Included is a U.S. Armed Forced affidavit “Bring Back” paper from Bagram, Afghanistan dated October 21, 2016 listing this gun by make, model, and approximate year of manufacture.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The lever has a bit of wiggle. Good bore for its age. This example sports a solid stock with an expected amount of wear. Legible markings. Lightly engraved frame. Liege proofed barrel.
