Description:
Nice MOSSBERG “BROWNIE” Four Barrel .22 Caliber Rimfire DERINGER Pistol C&R

O.F. Mossberg’s FIRST GUN/PISTOL Produced

Here we present a C&R Mossberg “Brownie” Four-Barrel .22 Caliber Rimfire Deringer Pistol, made circa 1919 to 1932 in New Haven, Connecticut. First off, when people hear the name Mossberg, most gun enthusiasts think shotgun and leave it at that. Little do people realize that O.F. Mossberg and sons actually did make a pistol, and that is what we have here. The Mossberg Brownie is a four shot, .22 Long Rifle pistol, similar to a deringer or pepperbox, produced by O.F. Mossberg & Sons from 1919 to 1932. The Brownie is based on an earlier pistol patented and licensed to the Shattuck Company by Oscar Mossberg where he worked as a manager. After working for Stevens and Marlin-Rockwell, Mossberg and his two sons started a new firearms company of their own in 1919.

The new company needed to develop a product that was simple and could turn a quick profit, so Mossberg turned to a four-barreled .22 caliber handgun that he designed while working for Shattuck. With Mossberg holding the patent, he reworked the gun, made it a more powerful .22 Caliber Long Rifle, and named his gun with a new patent number the “Brownie”. The gun was introduced by the new O.F. Mossberg and Sons Company for just $5 in 1920 and was an instant success as a concealed carry pistol. Being cheaper that a small Colt or Browning vest gun, the “Brownie” found a niche market and earned a solid reputation.

The overall condition is fair. Original finish. The action is partially functional: it will fire once but the hammer and the tab under the hammer get caught on the firing pin aperture. The bores are dark. The grips are solid. Numbers match.
