Description:
c1882 LETTERED Antique COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER .44-40 WCF SAA Revolver

Black Powder Frame 6-Shooter to Chicago, IL

Here we present an antique Colt Frontier Six-Shooter Model 1873 Revolver in .44-40 WCF, manufactured in 1882 in Hartford, Connecticut. The factory archive letter states the cartridge as .44/40 and lists the original finish as blue when it was shipped with 19 others to Hibbard, Spencer & Company in Chicago on January 3, 1882. Chicago in 1882 was a large city and still bordered what was the Frontier of the United States. As such it was a hub of activity with the railroad being a main artery for getting raw materials and livestock from the West to the East as well as getting supplies and hardware such as this revolver from East to West.

Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

The overall condition is good. Cleaned. The action is functional but a bit out of time—if the hammer is brought back beyond the full-cock notch the cylinder revolves beyond the stop notch. Otherwise it has all 4 clicks and holds all notches. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The grip is walnut and remains solid. The numbers match on the frame, grip frame, and trigger guard.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-3/4 inches.
