Holloway & Co. has been around since the 19th century. Based in Birmingham, England, Holloway was for the most part gun suppliers to the trade. The Holloway name lives on today in partnership with another famous maker, Naughton as Holloway & Naughton.
This Holloway 12 gauge English Boxlock upland Gun was imported by Jenkinson of New York, NY and is marked on the barrels as such. Jenkinson imported a good number of English guns from 1920s to 1960s and nearly all were made by Holloway. This fine example was made in Birmingham, but proofed in London. It is fitted with timed ejectors and a Churchill Quick-Sighting Rib. The 28" barrels are choked light modified and modified with bright bores and the 2 5/8" London-proofed chambers made specifically for the American market are nitro proofed for the heavier 1 3/16oz loads. The barrels retain about 98% blue and have an european style sling mount added midway with its corresponding mount a few inches from the toe. Other features include double triggers, Splinter forend with an Anson release, and checkered butt English Straight stock with dimensions measuring 14 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" with slight cast off. Checkering is excellent overall and, for a reason known only to history, there is an expertly fitted piece of walnut inset behind the forend diamond plate cut well to match the diamond pattern. The gun balances 1" in front of the pin and weighs an easy to tote 6lb 6oz. There is 98% remaining case color on the water tables while externally the boxlock shows 85% case color with some age correct fading and vivid case color in areas that makes for a very appealing overall effect. The fences are engraved and along with the action have some very fine English scroll work with light borderline engraving; the work is still clean, sharp and includes Mr Jenkinson's name is inscribed on both sides. The fire blue on the floorplate, trigger guard and trigger guard tang is vivid in areas and going to a silver patina in others; these areas have engraving of the same excellent quality scroll as the action proper and the wood to metal fit is excellent. The gun is stocked in nicely figured English Walnut showing dark mineral lines with a few hunting and handling marks scattered around.
Such a well balanced and light, this gun will make it a favorite for any upland excursion, and if Robert Churchill's theory stands, it will make a fast shot even faster!
