Description:
General Specs: Colt, Year c. 1861, .31, 24.9oz
Serial Number: 105638

The 1849 pocket revolver was the successor to the Baby Dragoon and it was to become Colts most popular percussion revolver with about 325,000 produced between 1850-1873. This revolver was made circa 1861 at the onset of the American Civil War when all handguns was in great demand and this Special Presentation model was as useful an instrument as any utilitarian Army issue revolver. Given its exquisite ornamentation by the renown engraver, Gustav Young, we can easily imagine that this gun was given to an officer about to leave on his first posting. That it remains in such little used condition is a testament to the esteem in which it was held. The strong likelihood is that it was returned to Colt shortly after the Civil War for restoration. Overall it retains virtually all of its factory restored silver finish with a few missing spots at the cylinder stops. The restoration is extremely well done, without softening the engraving or cylinder roll marks. Grip is in equally great shape with 98% of the Colt Piano Varnish intact; there is a small blemish on the left grip, and at the top of the right grip by the frame, there are some fine handling marks evident. All the serial numbers are matching including rammer, wedge, cylinder and grip and also on the backstrap channel. Serial numbers have an attendant small dot- denoting extra attention to be given by the polishing rooms final finish of the gun. The gun's mechanics are crisp and positive and Colt's famous four clicks are audible against the strong main spring. The pistol has 5" octagonal barrel with a bright shiny bore with strong rifling with a few areas of very fine pitting.

Engraving in detail: Barrel is engraved "Sam l Colt" address. Left side of frame has "COLTS PATENT" engraved in a pillow shape. Cylinder has 5 chambers with fine deep-rolled Stagecoach Holdup Scene and all five safety pins crisp and serviceable. The silver plated brass trigger guard and backstrap contain a varnished, highly figured burl walnut one piece grip. The revolver is beautifully engraved by Gustave Young in deluxe full coverage foliate arabesque patterns on the frame with one scroll on the right side terminating in a flower blossom. Engraving extends over the barrel lug and top slide flats with matching patterns on the rammer pivot. One scroll on left side of barrel lug terminates in a flower blossom and another on the right side terminates in Mr. Young's trademark dog's head. Hammer is also deluxe engraved with foliate arabesque patterns on shank and a wolf's head on each side of nose with fish scales on sides of shank and top edge. Top of the backstrap has Mr. Young's typical fan pattern with foliate arabesque patterns down the backstrap, on the buttstrap and trigger guard. Screw heads and barrel wedge are all engraved. The barrel crown is framed with a double border pattern.

This is a captivating example of Colts Model 1849 Pocket Revolver and in such high condition it assuredly is a rarity and would make a very fine, handsome centerpiece to any gathering of Colts.
