Description:
General Specs: Colt, Year 1861, .36, 25.7oz
Serial Number: 8134

The Colt Model 1865 was produced from 1861 through circa 1872 and about 22,500 were manufactured in barrel lengths of 4½, 5½ and 6 ½ inches, about 7500 of each length being made. This five-shot .36 caliber percussion revolver featured a rebated frame allowing a larger caliber cylinder to be fitted to the small Pocket size frame.  As metallic cartridges became more prevalent this model was to be the last full production percussion revolver made by Colt, the factory moving to build the new cartridge guns. Many of Colts percussion pistols went on to be converted for cartridge loading and so factory manufactured guns in their original configuration are consequently rare and command higher prices than their converted counterparts.
The frame, hammer, and lever were color case-hardened while the rest of the revolver was blued. The grips were of one-piece walnut with brass trigger-guard and straps. The barrel address is "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA", the left side of frame is marked "COLTS PATENT" and the left side of trigger guard is stamped "36 CAL". This gun conforms to other model 1865 revolvers with blue & color case hardened with 4-1/2" octagonal barrel, brass pin front sight. The brass trigger guard and backstrap contain a one piece varnished walnut grip. The pistol is excellent overall, all matching serial numbers including wedge, frame, trigger guard and grip. The barrel retains about 80% original blue with some scratches, especially at wedge, and small areas of fine pitting and some fading towards the muzzle. Frame, loading assembly and hammer retain most of their original case colors with some dulling on the recoil shields. The cylinder retains about 50% finish with the remainder gone to a warm gray,  and there is a drag line while the stage coach scene is easily visible. Trigger guard & backstrap are brass with a rich patina. Screws are fire blued and in excellent condition.  The Grip is sound and tightly fit retaining about 80% of its original bright varnish with some loss of finish on both sides near the frame where it appears darker with the finish worn away with similar wear on the grip base.  Mechanically the gun is in excellent working order with a strong mainspring and timed cylinder rotation, all five cylinder nipples and safety pins are in excellent condition. The bore exhibits strong rifling with some areas of pitting.
This Colt Model 1865 still has its Mahogany presentation box. Velvet lined with partitions, the box includes a powder flask with Eagle and shield on both sides with brass charger and steel spring, Colts bullet casting tool marked "COLT'S PATENT," which is of the steel variety and casts a ball and conical bullet simultaneously. Colts L-shaped screw driver and nipple wrench (unmarked) with blued finish. A small brass unmarked tin for Percussion Caps (empty) and an unopened package containing six of COLT'S Combustible Cartridges. A few loose round bullets and a skeleton key complete this Colt 1865 display.
A Civil War period Colt in overall very fine condition with its original presentation box, it would be a great addition for any collection, thank you for looking. Enjoy.

Note from the Colt collectors Association- The re-classified Colt Pocket Model 1865 of Navy Caliber percussion revolver or Pocket Navy was previously known to collectors as the “Model of 1853” or the “Model 1862 Pocket Navy”. or as the “Pocket Model of Navy Caliber” or merely “Pocket Navy.”
