Description:
{ SOLD.)  This carbine is a early production unit has a four digit serial number S/N1889 marked both sides of hinge and under the forearm plus a poorly stamped assembly number around srcrew hole for forearm wood on barrel  A faint Government inspection mark on left side of stock grip area.It was manufactured by Mass arms co. I acquired this carbine in a estate in the upper Midwest, South Dakota area. With the low S/N I under stand that some of the early ones were turned over to the pony express. Could not fine out any documented history on the carbine because all with knowledge have passed.
The carbine appears to have had extensive use during the war and after.some light pitting on surface in places more so on left side could have been from carrying by the sling next to body The bore is good does have light pitting in a couple of spots in the grooves of barrel the lans are sharp and well defined. the barrel latch works good opens more easier than some. Locks up good but does have a slight bit of play in action to barrel hinge could be the hinge screw being wore some. Never had removed the hinge screw because even with the slight play the carbine works and shoots well for its age.Carbine displays the sling attachments verses the sling bar attachment testament of its low S/N . The wood is good has its normal dents and scratches like all old military fire arms do.
I believe the gun is pretty much all original with the exception of the front sight blade and the tension spring and screw of the rear sight witch I replaced because they were missing when I purchased the carbine.
Over all its a good piece of history that shows the use they endured through time.
