The Browning Automatic 5, most often Auto-5 or simply A-5, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun designed by John Browning. It was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun design, and remained in production until 1998. The name of the shotgun designates that it is an autoloader with a capacity of five rounds, four in the magazine and one in the chamber. Remington Arms and Savage Arms sold variants called the Remington Model 11 and Savage Model 720 that were nearly identical but lacked the magazine cutoff found on the Browning. The Browning Auto-5 was the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun. Designed by John Browning in 1898 and patented in 1900, it was produced continually for almost 100 years by several makers with production ending in 1998. It features a distinctive high rear end, earning it the nickname "Humpback. This particular example is in very good overall condition overall. This fine gun has some high edge wear, some handling marks and a few spots of finish loss on top of the barrel 8 to 10 inches from the muzzle. The 26 inch plain barrel has a bright bore, 2 3/4 inch chamber, bead front sight, and is choked improved cylinder. The stock and forend are lighter than most seen on Belgian made Auto 5 shotguns. The stock has lost a small area of gloss finish on the left side of the wrist. There is some light checking of the gloss finish on both sides of the stock and forend. The butt plate is the sylized type used by FN of the period. Very tasteful engraving on the receiver gives this gun just the right amount of visual appeal. This fine gun would make a great addition to any collection or a wonderful beginning for a new collection.
